Back and neck pain can be complex issues causing you a great deal of pain as well as limit your ability to enjoy all life has to offer; from walking to sports to playing with grandchildren on the floor.
If you have back or neck pain for more than 4 weeks, you likely have a complex situation where normal activity or simple treatment with ice, heat, and stretching won’t help. Effective treatment means treating all the problems with the mobility of structures in the area or even nearby areas. After all, everything is connected (just like the song)!
- Low Back Pain: The effective treatment of low back pain requires that the muscles and vertebra (bones) of the lower back, sacroiliac joints (tail bone), hips and rib cage be evaluated for normal mobility and treated with specific Manual Therapy as necessary. Hip muscle and joint tightness are common causes of low back pain. Sometimes the organs, that are directly attached to the spine through the abdomen, need to be treated with Visceral Manipulation to take tension off the individual vertebrae (bones) in your spine and loosen your muscles to get rid of your pain.
- Mid Back Pain (between the shoulder blades): The effective treatment of mid back pain requires that the muscles and vertebra (bones) of the mid-back, and specifically the rib cage, be evaluated for normal mobility and treated with specific Manual Therapy as necessary. People don’t usually think of the ribs as being part of the back, but they are. In addition to you being able to touch your ribs on your chest and sides, the ribs also run around and into your back to attach to the vertebra. So…problems with tight and stiff ribs in the chest and sides will cause your back to not work right and give you pain. We treat LOTS of people for back pain that have primary rib problems that have not been treated by other practitioners (chiropractors, massage therapists, Physical Therapists). We understand, treating ribs can be challenging, after all, there are 24 of them so it takes TIME! In addition to the vertebra, ribs and muscles in the immediate area, normal function of the shoulders and shoulder blades is essential for the treatment of mid back pain.
- Neck Pain: The effective treatment of neck pain requires that the muscles and vertebra (bones) of your neck, mid-back, rib cage and shoulders be evaluated for normal mobility and treated with specific Manual Therapy as necessary. The muscles of your mid and upper back, as well as your shoulders, attach to your neck. The muscles on the front of your neck are often forgotten as a cause of neck pain and must be evaluated as well. Since your first rib is located all the way up under the bulky muscle on the top of your shoulders, the common problem of tightness in this muscle is usually from a restriction in normal mobility of your first rib that causes neck pain. The mobility of your chest (ribs) and cranium (bones of the head) is also important for proper pain-free neck function. These areas can all be treated with specific Manual Therapy to rid you of your neck pain once and for all.
